Customer Requirement

A UK based world class aerospace manufacturer approached CSD as they required Bespoke Tooling to lift and manipulate a 800kg, 4 metre diameter carbon fibre cylinder. The component had to be transferred through varying stages of production as part of the development of a composite technology engine.

Project Challenges

The key challenge for the CSD team was the sensitivity of the carbon fibre material considering the large size and weight of the component.  In addition to this, the Bespoke Tooling had to be able to be used at multiple locations, each with differing requirements.

The CSD Bespoke Tooling Solution

CSD designed, manufactured and built a Bespoke Tooling System consisting of a hexagonal spreader beam arrangement with six assembly legs to connect to the component. The design included interchangeable tooling at the end of each assembly leg, enabling it to adapt to the requirements at each location. The system was suspended from an electric chain hoist via an eyebolt, with an additional safety chain as a secondary restraint. This solution allows the operators to safely and effortlessly lift and manipulate the large item between the 10+ production stages.
