Bespoke Process Equipment – Inner Build Rig

Customer Requirement

CSD were contacted by a leading health machinery manufacturer to assist on a Bespoke Process Equipment project for an Inner Build Rig.

Project Challenge

One of the main challenges of this project was that the system had to be compatible with multiple coil variants that are required for the Build Rig. For maximum process efficiencies, the customer also requested that the gripper would be able to lift various difference sizes of tooling, barrels and GRPs.

The CSD Bespoke Process Equipment Solution

The CSD Bespoke Process Equipment Solution includes a crane which is used to move the bespoke gripper to the build rig, clean table, GRPs and load pallet. The crane is powered in X and Y directions and has an electric chain hoist. It includes slow down and stop switches which the operator can use to easily control the movement. The pneumatic gripper is attached to the chain hoist and is designed to pick the coil and tooling assembly with integrated chains and hooks. The bespoke gripper will then pick the top and bottom barrels required for the build via pneumatic clamps and then pick up the GRPs in preparation for load to the Build Rig.

The Build Rig itself lowers the GRPs over the barrels ensuring they remain square to the barrel throughout the process. It consists of a mast with a hoist with a set of arms that raise and lower on the masts linear bearing. The arms are preset for the different sizes of GRP for each coil and are semi automated so the operator simply selects the coil type and GRP type and the arm automatically adjusts to fit. The base of the system has a rotating vacuum plate which enables the build tooling to be built and tested in situ. The system is controlled by an easy to use PLC and control panel.
