Bespoke Automated Assembly Machine

Customer Requirement

CSD were contacted by a leading fibre optic technology company to design, build and install a Bespoke Automated Assembly Machine to assemble fibre-optic plug assemblies.

Project Challenge

In order to maximise efficiencies, the customer was looking for one automatic assembly machine which could assemble the three components of the fibre optic assembly. The challenges included dealing with the very small fibre optic components and the complexity of the assembly process involving three separate parts.

The CSD Bespoke Automated Assembly Solution

The CSD Design Team designed one machine which could incorporate the assembly of the three components. Each of the parts is loaded into the vibratory bowl feeders with a capacity of approximately 1000 pieces.

The bowl feeders then filter the flow of parts into the outfeed area and automatically check the orientation of each using a sensor. Only the parts which are in the correct orientation are permitted to pass through with the incorrect ones being returned back to the bowl. Each bowl is fitted with a low level sensor which will activate a beacon to notify the operator if more product needs to be loaded.

The assembly tooling is mounted to the assembly area with each set of tools including several layers to allow for the sequential assembly of the three components, all with differing specifications. The assembly area is fully guarded with interlocked access doors connected to the emergency stop circuit of the machine for additional safety protection.
