Automated Bolt Torquing Cell

Customer Requirement

CSD was approached by a global leader in automotive technology to design, manufacture, and install a fully automated bolt torquing cell. The system would be used to fit seat belts and connection bolts in the production environment —an essential task requiring precision, reliability, and seamless integration with the customer’s existing setup.

Project Challenge

The primary challenge was to design a bespoke automation solution that could integrate flawlessly with the customer’s current production line, without disrupting existing workflows. Efficiency, precision, and minimal modification to infrastructure were key.

CSD’s Automated Manufacturing Solution

Our Design Team developed a new platen datum system that integrated smoothly with the existing line, requiring only minimal adjustments. Four custom clamping blocks were installed at the corners of the platen, each actuated by powered cylinders and securely mounted to the heavy-duty base frame for maximum stability and repeatability.

A robotic arm, equipped with a bespoke end effector, was engineered to handle and position the seat belt accurately before torquing. This end effector used a combination of hook and clamp pin, operated via a cylinder, to ensure precise alignment.

To complete the integration, our Installation Team modified the customer’s existing production line control panels and software to accommodate the new system. We also implemented robust two-way communication between our automation system and the customer’s factory control infrastructure.

The final solution delivered a highly efficient, fully automated seat belt torquing process that blended seamlessly with the customer’s production line. The system increased accuracy, reduced cycle time, and enhanced overall productivity.
